This summer we are eager to open the castle exhibition for visitors to enjoy within a Covid19 safe and secure environment.
We have therefore developed a guide led tour which will be restricted to pre-booked groups of 12 or less visitors with a pre-start introduction outside to welcome and advise on behaviour within the venue. Visitors to our guide led tours will be asked to wear face masks while inside the venue so please do arrive prepared.
The castle exhibition rooms are large and spacious so with groups of no more than 12, social distancing will be comfortably straight forward however the guide will be in charge of the group to ensure everyone is well informed and maintaining that policy.
Blair Castle has been the home of the Atholl family for over seven centuries. The castle has had a diverse history, witnessing both turbulent and peaceful times, enlarged and adapted over 750 years to suit the needs of the family and style of the day. Home to politicians, soldiers, agriculturalists and entrepreneurs, the family history is brought to life against a backdrop of fine 18th century interiors and Scottish baronial architecture, in 30 rooms. The guide will lead the group through the castle, highlighting the main themes to each room and bringing the exhibition to life.
Within the tour is a special exhibition we are launching this season. The exhibition, ‘The Atholls, a family divided’ transports us to the time of the Jacobite Risings. Here we discover the intrigue and plots that placed the Atholl Murrays at the heart of the Jacobite cause which split the family for 60 turbulent years.
Artefacts freshly presented this season include a set of bagpipes from the early 18th century belonging to John McGregor, piper to the Duke of Atholl and a beautifully engraved compass used by Prince Charles Stuart in 1744.
