Environmental Visitor Charter

Help us to look after the environment whilst making sure you have a great visit with us.

We are constantly working to make Blair Castle and Atholl Estates more eco-friendly, but we need your help too.  We can all reduce our impact on the environment by making choices.  As a visitor you have a very important role to play in helping us to conserve our natural assets and become a more sustainable destination.  Here are our recommended tips on how you can help, both at home and whilst on holiday:

Give the car a rest

Leave the car behind, if only for a day.  Walk, cycle or use public transport.  There is a train station in Blair Atholl and regular buses from Pitlochry, only 8 miles away.  Details available from the castle reception.  or click here.

Shop Local

Use local products wherever they are available.  They give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities.  We are fortunate to have some fantastic producers of food, drink and arts and crafts here in Highland Perthshire.  Ask our Gift Shop staff about the local products we carry.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Try to avoid overly packaged goods and say no to the extra carrier bag.  You can also support us in our efforts to recycle.  Most of our office and restaurant waste is recycled so please ask the team about our recycling facilities.

Be Water Wise

The UK has rising costs for water treatment and flood defence so please use water wisely.  Turn off the tap after washing your hands and please report any leaking taps or toilets to our staff.  A lot of supplies are non-mains in Perthshire and surprisingly we do get water shortages each year when burns run low in this area and water conservation reduces the risk of empty tanks.

Respect Nature

Help us look after the landscape and wildlife by taking your litter home and leaving no trace of your visit, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly.  Ensure you follow the countryside Code.  Our Rangers Service, who are based in the Blair Atholl Visitors Centre have lots of information and maps for enjoying our magnificent countryside whilst minimising impact on the environment.  Visit Diana’s Grove, the Deer Park, Hercules Garden and the Squirrel Walk whilst you are here at the castle to experience our landscape and wildlife first hand.  For more information on the countryside access code, please click here.

Support Green Businesses

We are very proud to have achieved a gold standard Green Tourism Business Scheme Award.  There are thousands of businesses in the UK working to reduce their carbon footprint through the Green Tourism Business Scheme.  Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their efforts to be more sustainable.
